Beyond Inspection: My Journey as a Social Care Consultant

What does it really mean to support quality in social care? In this week’s blog, Sarah Okoro shares her experiences as a social care consultant and managing director of Vivacity Healthcare .

Read on to discover how Sarah sees quality not just as compliance, but as culture.

Working as a social care consultant has reshaped my understanding of what “quality” truly means in health and social care. Each audit and quality assurance visit I carry out is not just a tick-box exercise: it’s a learning experience that deepens my empathy for frontline teams and sharpens my insight into what turns a compliant service into an outstanding one.

The Power of Independent Eyes

In my practice, I’ve realised that independent audits are never about catching people out or simply “marking your own homework.” When inspections are undertaken by someone outside of the daily operation, someone who can see the details with fresh eyes, they bring a new level of credibility to quality assurance. That’s why my relationship with Vivacity Healthcare’s own home care business is so complementary. As a consultant working both independently and within the organisation, I’m able to bring that essential objectivity, ensuring we don’t fall into complacency or miss opportunities for genuine improvement.

Coaching and Developing Registered Managers

Some of the most rewarding moments are when I get to coach and support Registered Managers. Many are still finding their feet, and it’s a privilege to help them translate the CQC five key questions (Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-led) from theory into everyday practice. Sometimes, it’s about practical steps such as tightening up medication records or embedding robust safeguarding. But more often, the biggest gains come from mindset shifts. When managers see inspection as a development opportunity, not a threat, the entire culture lifts.

From “Good” to “Outstanding”

A recurring theme in my work is helping providers move from “Good” to “Outstanding.” The difference can be subtle. Often, it’s about how well the provider demonstrates impact, innovation, and continuous learning. Outstanding services don’t just meet regulations, they inspire confidence in everyone, from the people receiving care to commissioners, and even their competitors. My biggest tip is simple. Evidence your impact and share your learning. The CQC now looks for services that work well, not just for their own benefit, but for those that actively support the sector.

Collaboration, Not Competition

Despite running businesses that, on paper, compete with one another, my best experiences have come from a spirit of collaboration. The social care sector is too important and too stretched for rivalry to come before the needs of people who draw on services. Whether I’m working with Vivacity Healthcare or consulting for other providers, I see the same result. When we share ideas and resources, everyone benefits.

Leaving Your Mark

Above all, I believe in leaving a positive mark wherever I go. Every service I touch, every manager I support, and every audit I complete should add value. Sharing best practice, coaching future leaders, and supporting organisations to pass CQC inspections “over the line” isn’t just good for business – it’s good for the entire sector. If we all focus on raising standards collaboratively and openly, the social care sector will keep improving in ways that truly matter for people’s lives.

Whether you’re a Registered Manager, a fellow consultant, or someone passionate about improving social care, let’s keep the conversation going. What does “quality” mean in your context? What helps you move from good to outstanding? Feel free to share your reflections, questions, or experience.

I’m always open to learning and connecting.
